The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Security Matters, Capt. Iniobong Ekong (retd), has launched an scholarship programme for 55 students of tertiary institutions.
He made the announcement on Friday during a birthday surprise visit staged by elders of Ndiya Ward 2, led by the Councilor for the Ward and Chief Whip of Nsit Ubium 7th Legislative Council, Hon Mrs Anne Abraham, on him at his country home.
The ward elders presented a picture frame bearing pictures of and names all the elders of the ward to Capt. Ekong as a show of solidarity and support for the Maintain Peace Movement campaign in the state.
Receiving the gift, Ikwa Afang, as Capt Ekong is fondly called, thanked the people for the surprise visit to express their love love for him on his birthday.
Speaking on the scholarship grant of N100,000 each to fifty-five (55) students of tertiary institutions from Nsit Ubium Local Government Area, he said it was part of his ways of giving back to his people in celebration of his 55th birthday.
Capt. Ekong eulogized the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel for his capacity development programmes in the state especially for the youths.
He said the Governor is not only preparing the future for the youths, but also preparing the youths for the challenges of the 21st century.
Charging the beneficiaries to make good use of the grant, Capt. Ekong said the money was neither for them to join his political party nor to do him any special favour, but to assist them pay their fees, buy textbooks and buy food for themselves.
The fifty-five students were drawn from all the wards in Nsit Ubium in various tertiary institutions across the country.
In the entourage were Political Leader of Ikot Ukap, Rev Ofong Inyang; one-time Councilor for the ward, Rt. Hon. Abraham Abraham Anyang; Acting Ward Chairman, Mrs. Alice, among others.
