Akwa Ibom State Government has described as baseless and unfounded, a statement credited to the opposition leader in the state, Senator Godswill Akpabio and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole, where they claimed that the state government was conniving with the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, Barr. Mike Igini to manipulate the forthcoming elections in favor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Akpabio and Oshiomhole were quoted on Monday during the APC caucus meeting and press briefing held in Abuse to have alleged that “there is an unholy alliance between the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state and Akwa Ibom State Government” to manipulate the forthcoming election in favour of the PDP. But the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Charles Udo in a swift reaction has urged the public to discountenance the claim as they are false.
Addressing a press conference, Monday in Uyo, the Commissioner said the statement were part of the plots by the opposition party, APC to discredit the electoral process in the state.
“Two supposedly Nigerians made some baseless allegations that; that is the Chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole and the former Senate Minority Leader Godswill Akpabio. They unfortunately alleged that there is an unholy alliance between Akwa Ibom State government and INEC in the state.
“I want to use this opportunity to categorically and emphatically say that the allegations are not only baseless, but false. We see them as part of the scripted agenda of the APC to truncate free, fair and credible elections in the state”.
“Despite the provocative antics of the opposition, Akwa Ibom State and Akwa Ibom people will continue to be peaceful”.
Meanwhile, the Integrated Legal Defense Center, (ILDC), an arm of the Divine Mandate Campaign Council has disclosed that it has filed contempt of court proceedings against former Commissioner of Police in the state and now AIG in charge of Zone 6, Musa Kimo, Officer in charge charges SARS, Idorenyin Akpabio, CSP Udeme Brown and one other officer for allegedly flouting a court order.
Speaking with newsmen, Chairman of ILDC, Barr. Andem Andem who decried what he described as wanton and illegal arrest and incarceration of PDP members by the police without regards to a subsisting court order barring from such action, accused the aforementioned officers of being the arrowhead of human rights violation in the state.
“The Police high command should restrain themselves from intimidating, arresting any PDP supporter. AIG Zone 6, Musa Kimo and Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police have consistently flouted the court order, even after the court had placed injunction.
IDLC has filed contempt of court proceedings on the four police officers. We are calling on the court to rise up and protect the sanctity of the court”.
Recall that a High Court in the state presided over by Justice Ekaette Obot had on February 4 issued an order of interim injunction restraining the Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police in the state from arresting or intimidation of members of the PDP by the police.
