The maiden edition of the Councilor’s Unity football competition in Ndiya Ward 2, Nsit Ubium Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, ended on Sunday, 3rd January 2021.
Ikot Akpanofuk slugged it out with Usung Inyang in the grand finale of the tournament which held at Comprehensive Secondary School, Ndiya.
The match ended in penalty shootouts after a barren draw in the full time of the match.
Ikot Akpanofuk clinched the trophy with a 4-3 victory against Usung Inyang who took second and Ikot Ewang coming third after winning Ikot Ukap in penalty shootouts in a match which ended 1-1 draw.
The football competition is sponsored by the Councilor for Ndiya Ward 2 and Chief Whip of the 7th Nsit Ubium Legislative Council, Hon (Pastor) Mrs Anne Abraham, to engender unity among the four communities.
Commissioner of Economic Development and Ibom Deep Seaport, Mr Akan Okon, who performed the official kick-off for the match, commended the Councilor for swinging into action shortly after bring sworn into office.
“What she has done is in line with the policy of Governor Udom Emmanuel in sports development and peaceful coexistence.
“If this is a maiden edition and it is up to this standard, I can imagine what it would be like in the next three years.
“From what I’ve seen, a lot it talents will be discovered in this competition.”
The sponsor of the tournament, Pastor Mrs Anne Abraham, who was visibly elated, expressed appreciation to the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel and wife, Martha for the opportunity to serve her people.
She thanked all the teams for maintaining peace, love and unity, which she said is the sole aim of the competition, charged them to remain in unity for growth of Ndiya in particular and Nsit Ubium as a whole while maintaining a more peaceful Akwa Ibom.
Other dignitaries at the event including the Chairman of Nsit Ubium LGA, Arch Iniobong Orok; Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Mr Nse Edem; and Aniefiok Edem, among others.
Guests at the event were thrilled by groups of dancers including cultural and unity dancers.
