Arising from the Stakeholder’s meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on Monday, 12 October 2020, at the State Party Secretariat, Uyo, the Chairmanship candidate for Eket Local Government, Hon. Akaniyene Tommey, has commended Governor Udom Emmanuel’s readiness to conduct Local Government Election scheduled for October 31 this year.
Hon. Akaniyene who is currently serving as the Councilor representing Ward 2 Central (old Ward 2), recalled that, though the 2017 Local Government Election came after a Transition Committee, the 2020 LG Poll taking a different form, disregarding Transition Committee and swinging into electing new executive, is a better development for the grassroot especially in this period of COVID-19 that has left negative impact on households.
“This is the only way that will allow the top-tiers of government indent their function on the grassroot level and make the grassroot relevant.
” The Local Government as the third-tier of government, is the closest to the people and the need to set up an executive administration to handle their affair should be undebatable, and this is made possible courtesy our Governor Mr. Udom Emmanuel”, Hon. Akaninyene divulged.
The Chairman candidate also commended the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) for their rigorousness and preparation to ensure the election holds as scheduled without any shift.
He reposed confidence on the electoral body to conduct a free, fair and credible election.
“I am sure that PDP will win with a landslide since the campaign projection and mobilization is huge.
“As God will lead us, we will do our best to drive growth and development for the grassroot. We will work to complement the previous administration and consolidate on their successes and also drive the development contained in the completion agenda of the Governor”, he remarked.
Earlier, the state party Chairman, Sir. Udo Ekpenyong, who presided over the meeting, charged organizing committees to play their roles in ensuring a smooth conduct of the exercise.
He also encouraged party faithfuls to work for the development of the party beyond elections, adding that the strength of the party hinges on the ward structures.
