Ahead of the forthcoming local government election holding in few months time in the state, it appears stakeholders in Ibesikpo Asutan are fed up with what a source in area has described as ‘underperformance’ by the current Chairman of council, Sylvester George.

Already, a lady aspirant and retired School Head Mistress, Mrs. Akon Michael, has been adopted by the PDP Chapter Executive members, stakeholders and political leaders from the area, as their consensus candidate ahead of the primary election.

Ibesikpo Asutan has two clans; Ibesikpo and Asutan with twelve (12) electoral Wards in all.

With the latest development, Mrs. Michael hails from Asutan Ward 3, and she would take over from the incumbent Chairman, Mr. Sylvester George, whose tenure is gradually winding down.

Mrs Akon Michael

This reporter gathered that the news of emergence of Mrs. Michael, a Pastor’s wife was greeted with jubilation in the area, as the people hailed the PDP, political leaders and stakeholders for placing premium on the unity of the two clans as evident in their decision.

Observers have described the decision of the stakeholders as a welcome development, as they opine that the move has broken the jinx in the area since its creation, as this was the first time all aggrieved factions and leaders from the two clans of Ibesikpo and Asutan would sit under one roof, bury their differences and take a consensus decision .

In attendance during the meeting were, the former PDP State Chairman; Prince Uwem Ita Etuk, member representing the area in the State House of Assembly; Rt Hon (Elder) Aniekan Nyong Uko and the State Commissioner for Finance; Mr. Nsikan Linus Nkan as well as two former parliamentarians; Hon Emmanuel Obot and Obong T. O. Akpan, among others.

In his reaction, the State Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Linus Nkan, who lauded other leaders for their steadfast resolution, said, Mrs Akon Michael, was adopted for the office of Chairman, Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Council, “because the seasoned administrator has demonstrated depth, experience and deep understanding of the critical need of the Traditional Institution, elders, the youth and women in the area especially at this time and has the capacity to proffer clear solutions in that respect.”

On his part, the representative of the area in the State House of Assembly, Elder Aniekan Uko, at the stakeholders meeting of his ward, Saturday, said he was also satisfied with the choice of Mrs. Michael.

” I join other eminent and revered political leaders in Ibesikpo Asutan to say that we need a peace-loving, capable, intelligent and Christ-centric leader like our dear Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, to oversee our Council. The gender does not come in at all. After all, were all of us not created by the same God?” Uko quipped.

A chapter executive member of the PDP in the area who preferred to react anonymously because he is not the official spokesperson of the party told our reporter that their party’s constitution empowers her leaders and stakeholders to deliberate and reach a consensus on how to pick candidates for elections, in order to avoid what he called “bad blood” within the party’s hierarchy.
