Akwa Ibom State Government has said that one of its core target is to completely eradicate flood which has become a major concern in the State, especially in the Uyo Metropolis.
Speaking during a tour on some major erosion sites in the Uyo Metropolis, the Commissioner for Environment and Petroleum Resources, Sir Charles Udoh, stated that the exercise is to ensure that flood control in the state is achieved without delay.
Sir Udoh expressed concern over the high rate of uncontrollable disposal of debris, unused polymers and other wastes in the State, maintaining that with this, the erosion control systems may likely encounter difficulty in the discharge of the flood to the designed destination.
The Environment and Petroleum Resources Boss was accompanied by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Nsudoh Nsudoh, the State Project Coordinator of Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP),Dr.Ubong Harrison, Directors in the Ministry, Contractors and Project Consultants.
The projects visited includes, Etim Umana gully erosion Site; St. Luke Hospital erosion Site, Anua Offort, Uyo High School, and Ibrahim Babangida Avenue other flood control projects in the area.
