Algeria’s President Resigns Amidst Massive Protest
Following a massive protest that rocked core of Algeria and grounded its economy, President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has submitted his resignation.
The 82-year old President who has rarely been seen in public since suffering a stroke in 2013, has been in power for 20 years.
Majority of the protesters are young people who are not involved in party politics. They say they want a new system of government, not simply someone replacing the ailing president.
They also demand the departure of an entire generation of Algerian political leaders, including those who would be in line to succeed the outgoing President, from Government.
According to a short statement published on Tuesday by the state-run Algeria Press Agency, President Bouteflika officially notified president of the Constitutional Council of his decision to end his term as President of the Republic.
