… Pass Vote of Confidence on Speaker Onofiok Luke
An attempt by five unseated lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who were formerly members of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, to take over the Assembly, has been foiled.
The illegal invasion by the five sacked lawmakers was aided by some security agents and thugs, who chased out staff of the House of Assembly.
However, the arrival of the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Onofiok Luke, who was accompanied by 20 other members, marked a tragic end of the comedy.
On sighting the arrival of the lawmakers, the impostors scampered out of the complex, the 21 lawmakers took their seats and proceedings commenced, with the clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren, and other staff of the chambers.
The Chief Security Officer of the state, His Excellency Gov Udom Emmanuel, arrived the complex and had a private meeting with the Speaker in his office.
While proceeding was in progress, members made insightful contributions. Rt. Hon. Friday Iwok representing Abak State Constituency said, “Mr. Speaker, we have a sitting time of 10 am for sessions in our Assembly. However those impostors, I’m told, came by 6am like criminals into the complex. I am happy that when they former members saw us coming, they ran away.
“As law abiding lawmakers, we refused to take laws into our hands, we simply allowed them to scale the fence and run away. But I join in condemning their action.”
Leader of the House, Rt Hon Sir Udo Kierian Akpan, on his part, said “The new Commissioner of Police aided to abate the thugs who invaded the House of Assembly today. As a House, we thoroughly warn him and urge the IG to redeploy him immediately”.
Also speaker, member representing Nsit Atai State Constituency, Rt Hon. Mark Esset, said that the person who impersonated the Sergeant at Arms was found out to be a retiree from Essien Udim.
Hear him, “One day, someone can just go to the market and buy the same cloths I love wearing to come in here and claim to be Mark Esset. Mr Speaker, the security agents cannot be exonerated in this issue. We must act now to forestall any further attempts by scrupulous elements to desecrate the Hallowed chambers of our Assembly.
“Mr Speaker, the impostor, Godwin Ukpong, is from Essien Udim. He should be arrested.” Hon. Mark Esset, represents Nsit Atai state constituency.
The 20 members of the 8th Assembly, during a plenary, passed a vote of confidence on the Speaker, Rt Hon Onofiok Luke. The vote of confidence was moved by the House leader and member representing Oruk Anam State Constituency, Rt Hon. Udo Kierian Akpan.
The House has called for the arrest of the impostor called Godwin Ukpong from Essien Udim who did the dirty job as the Sergeant at Arms for the estranged former lawmakers.
