Mixing Capital, Profit With Beer Money, A Recipe For Disaster, Charles Udoh Tells Entrepreneurs
By Umoh-Obong Kingsley |
The Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Akwa Ibom State, Mr Charles Udoh, has described as a way of ruin, the act of partying and lavishing monies meant for investment and income by business owners.
Speaking during the Ibom Investment Summit & Ubok Utom Udom Exposition 2018, held at the Barth Ebong Auditorium, University of Uyo Annex Campus, on Tuesday, he called on entrepreneurs in the state to consciously grow their processes while growing their businesses.
He said, “You need to consciously ensure that your beer money is different from your profit. Your capital, profit and beer money must never mix.
“The Choices you make today determine what you will become tomorrow. Successful economy in any part of the world do not depend on the civil service structure to grow, but allows the market structure to determine the economy.
“Developing countries depend on private sectors to grow their economy. What they do is to create enabling environment to attract investors to invest. If the foundation of your basic education is defective, the foundation of both your secondary and tertiary educations will also be defective.
“Enabling environment means there must be good road network, infrastructure must be on top of the range, youths must be educated and powered. It means that your people can afford to put basic food needs on their tables.”
Mr Charles Udoh who was Guest Speaker at the event, informed the participants that the entrepreneurial drive of the present government under the leadership of Mr Udom Emmanuel, has yielded significant and enormous results with influx of foreign investors to invest in the state.
He maintained that the government of today is a government that puts square pecks in square holes, and a government that is devoid of emotions, sentiment, and does not play politics with development.
According to the Information Boss, what is paramount to Akwa Ibom State is to build a sustainable future. To move the economy forward, he said, the government decided to teach people how to fish and not giving them fish, by repositioning the mindset of people and change the orientation of the people.
“First, the government decided to run on a 5-point agenda of Job Creation, Poverty Alleviation, Wealth Creation, Infrastructural Consolidation and Expansion, and Economic and Political Inclusion, in order to move the state in one direction devoid of ethnicity, political and religious lines.”
To drive the 5-point agenda, Mr Charles Udoh added that the government set apart three pillars – industrialization, tourism and agriculture – and create a platform and other opportunities where the average Akwa Ibom person can compete and harness his potential and excel.
He further stated that industries are sited on virgin locations across the state – places where there no economic activities – to boost the economy of those localities through the various business opportunities the projects bring.
The Commissioner, admonishing the entrepreneurs not to despise the days of their little beginning, said “If you get to the level Governor Emmanuel got to, you can never be poor in life. Money and power are not his problems. As a Banker, he rose to almost the highest level in the banking sector. To become a Managing Director like he was in Zenith Bank, controlling almost 1000 branches in Nigeria, Africa and Europe, means that power is not his problem.
“His problem is working tirelessly to give back to his people all the experiences he garnered while working in the private sector, and that is what he has been doing upon assumption of office in 2015.”
He charged them not to lose focus when faced with challenges, saying that when God wants to give a big gift, He wraps it in a bundle of difficulties. “If you look well, you’ll be able to see the gift,”
The Information Commissioner used the occasion and implored the entrepreneurs to rise to the occasion and collectively support the Government of Mr Udom Emmanuel because it has the right intention to restore the integrity and dignity of the Akwa Ibom man, maintaining that the Akwa Ibom man is not a traitor and not known to be lacking in integrity.
He decried the rate at which people waste huge amount of money simply demarket his own state despite government efforts to drive investors into the state, describing such act as the highest rate of insanity.
Also speaking at the event was the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Enterprise and Microfinance, Mr Ime Uwa, who called on the entrepreneurs to invest more money in their business ideas, adding that Governor Udom Emmanuel has done wonderful things for the younger generations of Akwa Ibom State.
He urged them to support the Governor for a continued and sustained peace and human capacity development in the state.
Also present at the event were Chairman, Forum of Former Councilors, Charles Bassey; President of Independent Electorate, Edidiong John, and a host of others.
