Udom Emmanuel’s 2nd Term Our Focus, Not 2023 Succession Politics –Akan Essien
A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP ) and youth leader, Hon. Akan Essien, has charged politicians and stakeholders from Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency to focus on ensuring total victory for Governor Udom Emmanuel in the forthcoming elections in 2019 and stop causing confusion by playing to the calculations of 2023 succession politics.
The former Councillor representing West Itam Ward 3 in Itu Legislative council gave the charge during a chat with newsmen while reacting to a statement credited to a one-time Transition committee Chairman and former Itu chapter Chairman of PDP, Mr Okon Etim Okon, recorded on page 11 of The Explorer Newspaper of Monday September 17 edition, purporting that the senator representing Akwa Ibom North East (Uyo) Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Bassey Albert (OBA), is blackmailing Governor Udom Emmanuel by claiming that the Governor has endorsed him for a second term in the Senate, while endorsing that the Itu/Ibiono Federal Constituency seat be retained in Itu local government area.
According to Hon Essien, this amounts to an attempt to smear the hard earned integrity of Senator Albert, who he maintained, has never had cause to drop the Governor’s name in furtherance of his ambition.
Hon Essien argued that, fate and Providence has placed Obong Bassey Albert where he is and, stressed that, Ibiono and Itu people, as well as, other local governments In Uyo Senatorial District, have earlier endorsed OBA for a second term in office, as well as, they unanimously endorsed Governor Emmanuel. He posited that, nothing has changed as far as that endorsement is concerned.
The former Councillor therefore called on Mr. Okon, and other politicians to stop heating up the polity, as that will be harmful to the prospects of uniting forces to return Governor Emmanuel come 2019.
Hon Essien further warned that, politicians who have their eyes on succeeding Governor Udom Emmanuel, after his full tenure in 2023, should suspend playing dirty politics and schemes with that ambition in mind, as the sole focus for now should be Udom Emmanuel’s victory in 2019.
He wondered what will become of the 2023 calculations of such politicians if, God forbid, Governor Emmanuel loses the 2019 Governorship election. Hon. Essien said he was the only wise thing to do is to get all hands on deck to deliver Governor Udom Emmanuel for another term in office as the first line charge, before other proposals can be factored in.
He however charged the good people of Uyo Senatorial District to ignore what he described as the false and unfortunate wild claims made by Mr Okon Etim Okon against Senator Albert and rally around the Senator, who he said, is working round the clock to ensure victory for Governor Emmanuel.
Hon. Akan Essien also called on all stakeholders of Itu, Ibiono and indeed the entire Uyo Senatorial District, to remain resolute in their earlier endorsement of the duo of Senator Albert and Governor Udom Emmanuel for continuity and consolidation of the stability, peace and good governance the state has witnessed in the last three years.
