A group of businessmen and women in Akwa Ibom State, under the auspices of Dakkada Entrepreneurs Ambassadors League (DEAL), has commended the State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, for reawakening and reforming entrepreneurship in the state.
Speaking on Thursday during a courtesy call to the President General of the Oron Union, Chief (Mrs) Janet Asuquo Amba, at the Oron Union Founders’ Hall in Oron, Chairman of the group, Mr Sam Edoho, stated that since Gov Emmanuel assumed office in 2015, the spirit of enterprise has been re-enacted among Akwa Ibom sons and daughters.
According to him, that does not mean that there was no spirit of enterprise in the state, but a recent research conducted has revealed that there are more young people who have taken to entrepreneurship within the last three years than before, thereby reducing the unemployment rate in the state as well as provide means of livelihood for the people.
Mr Sam who is the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Marketing and Brand Management, commended Gov Emmanuel for providing enabling and more secured environment for entrepreneurs to operate upon, and for the good works he is doing in Akwa Ibom State, saying that businessmen and women have benefited from the policies the Governor has made within the last three years.
One of the policies and programmes, he said, include provision of constant electricity. “Gov Emmanuel has a dream to make Akwa Ibom the first state in Nigeria with constant power supply, with the set up of the electric metering solution industry, producing meters which are given to houses to test the efficacy of the plant.
“Testimonies have revealed that the meters have helped to reduce the excessive electricity bills where some people were charged about N24,000 but has been reduced to about N8,000 or less per month.”
Mr Sam further mentioned other industries across the state to include the Fertilizer Blending Plant at Abak; Rice Mill in Ini LGA; Syringe Manufacturing industry in Onna; Akwa Prime and Hatchery in Uruan, and several other projects across the state.
He thanked the President General of Oron Union for finding time out of her busy schedule to receive the group, stating that the need to come together by the group as businessmen is to show the light in Akwa Ibom, and to show that people of the state, from inception, are entrepreneurs of note.
“That is what we want for every Akwa Ibom son and daughter. But if nobody stands up to give them the route and show them the light of possibility, that spirit of enterprise will remain inept in them.”
Describing Chief (Mrs) Janet Amba as a fighter for the defenceless and the less privileged through her pet project for people with disabilities, Mr Sam used the occasion to invite her to bring her passion for entrepreneurship into DEAL and become a Board of Trustees (BoT) member to drive, project, give advice and guidance to the group.
In her response, Chief (Mrs) Janet Asuquo Amba, thanked the Dakkada Entrepreneurs Ambassadors (DEAL) for the honour done her to be part of the team, saying that it will be another platform for her to contribute to the society.
She disclosed that as an entrepreneur, she is currently managing three companies with over 850 staff across the country as well as being in the business of providing business ideas to some bank managers.
“My plan as the President General of Oron Union is to turn virtually all Oron people into becoming entrepreneurs, part of which include the ongoing design for crayfish business. The best thing that can happen to anyone is to work for yourself, because when you work for yourself, you will help others to also work for themselves.
Chief (Mrs) Amba further stated that becoming a BoT member of DEAL will be of great advantage to her people, and assured that she will dance to the tune of anything that will bring progress to the people of Oron Union.
Earlier in his remarks, former Vice Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Hon. Victor Henry; Hon. Inemesit Okoko, stated that DEAL is a group of people with a second address – those who have something to fall back outside government – in order to contribute positively to the people of their societies.
He said that in this life, there are certain gentle men who believe that begging is not a nature in mankind and not a character in Akwa Ibom State hence the emergence of Dakkada, and added that Akwa Ibom, from inception, has always been a business hub.
In the entourage were Mrs Glory Asanga; Financial Secretary, Mrs Philomena Jonathan; and Mr Cyril Owowo, while the first Vice President of Oron Union, Head of Department of History and International Studies at the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Chief (Dr) Barr Asuquo Anwana; National President, Oron Union Women Wing, Chief (Mrs) Felicia Esang, among others were present to receive the Dakkada Entrepreneurs Ambassadors League (DEAL).
