Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has expressed satisfaction at the level of work in the ongoing construction of Akwa Ibom Traders Ultra-Modern Market located at Mbak Itok Oku, Itam, Itu Local Government Area of the state, within the short period of two months, saying that it is remarkable.
He made the commendation on Monday during an inspection and supervision tour to the 16000 shops capacity new Itam Market, to know the quality of work done, and commended the host community, youths and traders for embracing development, noting that many jobs will be created out of the project while so much money will also be generated as, according to him, cleaning companies, food factories, and logistics companies will spring up.
“I want to believe that by the time we finish this huge market which will house up to 16000 market shops of international standard with a whole lot of conveniences, water, 24 hours electricity supply and every other amenities a modern market could have, the economy of this community will be boosted, as the market is directly opposite an abattoir which is also at a modern standard.”
Gov Emmanuel used the opportunity and sensitised members of the community on the need to participate in the ongoing Voter’s Card Registration, stressing that “Voters card is not just for elections. As you all know, it’s been long censors was conducted in this country. If all of us here register and get a voters card, it will be easy to know the population of this part of the country.
“If you don’t register, you are cheating your children, siblings and family, because most of the developmental projects situated in a place is out of the estimated population in that area. So if we say we are populated, statistical analysis will be conducted to know how many people are 18 and above. So please go and register for your voter’s card. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has supplied enough machines and materials to ease the stress. It does not depend on your party affiliation, it’s about development.”
The State Governor also appreciated his Special Assistant on Market and Traders Affairs, Mr Idorenyin Raphael, and the Senior Special Assistant on Technical Matters and Due Process, Engr. Ufot Ebong, for their efforts in the project.
The project, which is in line with the infrastructural consolidation and expansion in the Governor’s 5-point agenda, is at a roofing level and is expected to be commissioned by September 23rd during the state anniversary celebration.
