The member representing Esit-Eket/Ibeno State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly (AKHA), Rt. Hon. (Dr) Usoro Akpanusoh, has stated that he will not indicate interest to contest for second term during the 2019 general elections until he is sure to have fulfilled all his campaign promises in 2015 to his people.
He stated this shortly after his induction as an Associate Member of the Ati Annang Foundation during the 2018 Annual General Meeting of the foundation held at its raffia city, Ikot Ekpene International Secretariat on Saturday.
According to him, “I will not declare my intension even though I’m being persuaded by my people to run for second term, until I fulfil my promises to them. That is why, on the 9th of April, 2018, during my empowerment programme, I’m going to fulfil almost 95% of my campaign promises. People will be empowered for transportation, vulcanising business, hair dressing, among others. We have acquired about 10 vehicles, 10 buses, 10 tricycles, 20 motorcycles and other items, and also give grants to women.”
Rt. Hon. Akpanusoh also said he cannot indicate interest to run for a second term when the state Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has not told Akwa Ibom people that he wants to contest for second term, saying: “I am a follower of the Governor. Until when he makes his declaration known to Akwa Ibom people, I can then join him to declare my intension.”
Commenting on his induction into the Ati Annang Foundation, the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation Chairman said that he felt highly honoured to be an Associate Member of the foundation. “This is one induction I never lobbied for, but it came naturally. I won’t take the relationship for granted. I have the hope that the relationship will bring more dividends in terms of provision of social infrastructure and sharing of ideas in bringing good things to the good people of Annang.
“This is a relationship that has been cemented. It goes beyond an individual and personal interest. It will be extended in terms of how we can live in peace between the Eket Senatorial District and Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.
We are still looking forward to that relationship come 2019, which has already been established as the Governor has been honoured with a very prestigious award for his superlative performance in the state within the short period of three years in office even in the meagre resources.
“I heard them say that one good term deserves another, which means that the entirety of Annang people have already declared their support for the Governor, which they have been doing both openly and secretly. It shows that Gov Emmanuel will win the governorship election in 2019.”
On why he is so confident of victory come 2019 despite the presence of opposition in the state, Rt. Hon. Akpanusoh emphatically stated that Akwa Ibom is predominantly a PDP state and nobody can change that fact. Just as the Senate Minority Leader usually say that you cannot be afraid of a goat when you are being escorted by a lion, there is no need to exercise fear about the presence of the opposition.
“I can only acknowledge the fact that there is opposition, but I’m not afraid of them. Their presence is only based on fact that it is one of the registered political parties in Nigeria. That does not mean that you should be afraid of the stock you are made of simply because there is opposition.
“The stock I am made of is of transparency, unity, togetherness, peaceful coexistence of the entire state. Mr Udom Emmanuel is a governor who does not show biasness in whatever he does. He carries everybody along.”
