The Akwa Ibom State Government has taken over the management of the Le-Meridien Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort at Nwaniba. The hotel facility is now under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Rt. Hon. Victor Antai, who made the disclosure on Monday while briefing members of the House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation and Finance on the activities of his Ministry at the ongoing budget defense exercise, cited poor management among others as some of the reasons government decided to take over the facility.
He explained that this was effected on 31st December 2017 when the former management of the hotel did a successful transition from Mariot to Ibom-Hotel and Golf Resort.
Hon. Antai revealed that for the past ten years the hotel had been in operation under its former managers, the Le-Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort has not remitted a single revenue to the state government despite the huge patronage it has been enjoying, adding: “The government has taken over Ibom Hotels and Golf Resort. It is now called, Ibom Hotel & Golf Resort.
“On 31st December, 2017, we had a clean transition. It was seamless, smooth and was done professionally. The management of the Five Star Hotel was quite poor.
“The former managers did not take the maintenance of the golf course serious. None of the staff working in the hotel has been sacked, a new manager has been appointed”.
When asked by Committee members to explain why the hotel was not able to remit a single revenue to the state government, Antai responded “80 percent of the time is run on diesel. Most of the revenue the hotel generates goes back to diesel”.
