The Akwa Ibom State Government says security agencies are to prosecute persons arrested with illegal possession of firearms during the just concluded Local Government elections in the state.
Governor Emmanuel stated this while interacting with Government House Correspondents shortly on arrival in Uyo, after casting his vote in his home town, Awa Iman, Onna Local Government Area.
The Governor said that his administration had earlier assured Nigerians and Akwa Ibom people in particular, of the conduct of a very free and transparent election, remarking that culprits caught with weapons suspected to cause havoc during the elections, cannot go free.
His words, “All those that we were able to arrest with any form of ammunition or illegal possession of weapons, certainly, all of them would be prosecuted. I have spoken with security agencies, none of them will go unpunished”.
He expressed delight that Akwa Ibom people adhered to his clarion call for peaceful participation in the elections, appreciating the massive turnout of voters across the state and stated that election is a game of numbers to prove the strength of concerned political parties.
While describing the conduct of the 2017 Local Government elections in the state as exceptionally peaceful, he attributed the feat to God, adding that the lessons learned would enhance preparations towards subsequent elections.
Governor Emmanuel was confident that the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC), would duly address any reported cases of irregularities and added, “I am not AKISIEC, so I cannot announce the result, I will just wait for the detailed report by the electoral body”.
He commended the security agencies for discharging their expected responsibilities and ensuring that the elections were not disrupted, acknowledging that Local Government elections are usually difficult to conduct without hitches.
