Exposed! APC Bribes Returning Officers N250m In 10 LGs
The insistence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) that elections results should be announced and winners declared at respective local government headquarters is not unconnected to a plan to ensure that the party wins at least ten local government areas.
The party, according to sources who pleaded anonymity, is said to have fortified a plan to bribe returning officers in ten strategic local government areas.
Our sources said the party’s concentration during the election coming up on Saturday, December 2, will be on ten local government areas specially targeted.
They are Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Ekpene, Oruk Anam, Obot Akara, Ikono, Ukanafun, Mbo, Urueffong Oruko and Okobo.
Sources further alleged that the APC is out to pay N25 million to returning officers in those local government who are willing to do their bid by announcing and declaring candidates of the party winner of the chairmanship election in the ten local government areas targeted.
The APC was said to be in talks with a top member of the Akwa Ibom State Independent Electoral Commission (AKISIEC) whom our sources claimed was mandated to facilitate a meeting with financiers of the deal through the local government election implementation committee.
It was further gathered that this motive informed the reason why the party insisted that election results should be declared in the local government areas.
The party had accused AKISIEC of amending the provisions of the State electoral law regarding the announcement of result, insisting that for a local government election, results should be announced in respective local government and not in Uyo, the State capital as the 2017 election manual released by AKESIEC stipulates.
The chairman of AKISIEC, Elder Aniedi Ikoiwak had said the provision which the APC accused the commission of amending has always been in existence, thus was not a new creation in the law.
Ikoiwak explained that local government returning officers have the powers to announce results, but do not have powers to declare the winner.
He said it was the Chief Returning Officer who has the right under the law to declare winner of the election for the chairmanship position.
The APC had earlier accused AKISIEC of secrecy and bias, alleging that the election body was working for the Peoples Democratic Party.
