The emergence of Governor Udom Emmanuel on the Akwa Ibom political scene since May 29, 2015 has been one glorifying, good payoff, credible value and unprecedented opportunity any development endearing fellow and group of persons will so much desire in his/her generation and that in projection to come. Governor Udom Emmanuel has so far, since mounting the saddle of leadership, proven himself a worthy servant leader ready to pilot the affairs and development programmes of state beyond where mere sit-home-critics and unfortunate scheming wailers had wished he can attain.
Within just of a spate of 24 months and still running, His Excellency drafted, conceptualised, implemented and above all, executed projects of various dimensions at lifting the civil service status of the state to a viable economic commercial hub south-south of Nigeria and beyond the economic landscape of West African coastal region.
From a well articulated human and capacity building/empowerment drive, infrastructural and road rehabilitation, public private partner initiative, revamp of moribund and ailing industries, investment opportunities, educational upgrade of decaying institutions, health related initiatives and above all, his industrialisation policy which is a major driver of his administration and one key cardinal feature of his five (5) point administration agenda like no other.
The resultant effect in all positive ramifications and numerous unfolding human friendly policies, initiatives and opportunities abound in his utmost desire in piloting a new Akwa Ibom project aimed at redirecting the affairs of state beyond mere reliance on monthly federal allocations and subventions to a rising pyramid of generating high profile internal revenue for the sustenance of society woven around qualitative economic indices.
Many of such reviving, human capacity initiative, development viable and opportunities are springing forth but premium among them is the DAKKADA MULTIPURPOSE COOPERATIVE SOCIETY INITATIVE (DMPCS), an initiative borne out of the Dakkada philosophy of Gov Udom Emmanuel, a determined, focus and leader of credible credentials who mounted the Akwa Ibom soil to deliver the lofty dividends of democracy.
The initiative came on board in September 2016 with the basic and primary aim of establishing a proper system for the strategic marketing of horticulture, aquaculture and poultry products churned out in subsistence quantity by our people, but certainly groomed to attain commercial quantity – one that will certainly benefit both the farming community and the trend down consumers. Prior to the coming on board of DMPCS, no proper system existed in the state for the marketing of produce such as palm fruits, cassava, maize, cocoa yam, chicken eggs, chicken meat, sea food, etc.
Farmers were trapped, entangled and at the begging mercies of middle men and the entire woven system benefited neither the farmers nor the consumers. Presently, the society has 775 members authentically comprising entrepreneurs, petty trader and smallholder farmers across the state with a paid up-share capital of N3.1 million as at 31 March, 2017.
The Dakkada Multipurpose Cooperative Society Initiative (DMPCS) is being manned under the canopy and aegis of the Directorate of Marketing and Brand Management, Governors Office. Plans have been perfected to elect its board this year during her Annual General Meeting slated to hold in September. The board, when inaugurated, will consist of 11 members. 10 members are elected from among the 31 branches of the society such as to spread the 10 Federal Constituencies of the state. The additional member will act as a government nominee. The President and Vice President are to be elected from among the elected members of 10.
In all this drive, one man stands out to chart a new power drive for the advancement of this initiative. His experience knows no bound in the area of business, politics and corporate services affiliation second to none among young men of our clime.
Ime Uwah has sailed higher in his pursuit of making the best use of any task he is given. Ime has sure proven beyond reasonable doubt that a young man (Akwa Ibomite) can be trusted with a task. There’s no doubt that he will exit the huge target of this initiative. Many had equal opportunity like he did, most jettisoned it, threw caution to the wind, many thought more opportunities will emerge, most misplaced their values and some just never knew how to add one and one to make a difference.
Ime Uwah is at the flag-ship of this initiative and the Special Assistant to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Marketing and Brand Management. His dedicated services to the multipurpose society has been professionally inclined, consistent and energetic in managing, promoting and ensuring the success of this initiative in the past few months of its existence.
In his task of creating and solidifying brands, Ime has re-evaluated the society in articulating well-laid down growth and development module for the initiative. The society has climaxed a landmark status that spans; training services, dissemination of knowledge by way of training, awareness creation, issuing technical advice and printed literature guide, input services, supply of farm equipment, consumables such as improved seedlings and fertilisers, marketing services such as arranging processing units and storage facilities. It includes cold storage, facilitating marketing of produces through owned marketing set up structure, ensure re-enumerative prices to farmers, direct supply of fruits and vegetables to factories, hospitals, hostels, clubs, social functions and processing industries.
With all the aforementioned and outlined aims and objectives of the society, it’s quite glaring that the tangible-hold of middlemen on both consumers and producers will definitely heave a sigh of relief.
They also delve into financial services: utilising an innovative approach to de-risk members of the cooperative. This, it has achieved vehemently by raising cost effective capital and loans to finance the members of the Dakkada Cooperative and the cooperative joint projects, such as the N1 million zero interest loan accessed by the 31 chapters of the DMPCS.
Her activities are piloted in threefold for the easy and smooth operation of the society; procurement, storage and majorly distribution. In all the nooks and corners of the state, various procurement centres abound where facilities have been arranged for acceptance, weighment and grading of produces. Prompt and immediate payment to the farmers made on acceptance of goods. The goods are then transferred to a central location, processing units or retail outlets as per requirement.
A projection of 329 retail outlets to be located in the 329 wards of the state is underway and this is to further ease product gathering and distribution. With all these strategic, careful laid-down plans and revealing packages, it’s umpteenth that the Dakkada Multipurpose Cooperative Society is alive and dutiful in all her biddings. With the lease of a central poultry processing plant, and procurement of a 40 tonne cold storage facility and a generating set, the DMPCS can now easily process poultry products for the retail market. It also has developed a distribution system for supplying vegetables and foodstuff to supermarkets, hotels, government hospitals and boarding schools amid others. The estimated number of goods handled by DMPCS in a day is figured out at 20 tonnes. It also supplies equipment, manure and consumables to the farmers at reduced rates and has plans to open 20 outlets in various markets in urban centres where special stores are set up for direct selling of produce.
DMPCS also associates and collaborates with other organisations dealing with agricultural inclined projects like the Ministry of Finance, Akwa Ibom Micro-Credit Scheme Committee, State Committee on Foreign Direct Investment and the Committee on Agriculture and Food Sufficiency. Others too are on the pipeline who are eager to share, participate and align with the initiative.
Above all, as a grand testimony to what they are doing thus far, the society access financial assistance from the State Government, donor agencies (local/international) and other financial institutions for the advancement of her activities. In all, the Dakkada Multipurpose Cooperative Society has been the best of its element in the constitution of a platform where ideas in the chain of production, marketing and distribution of agricultural produce is given a prompt, adequate and smooth delivery and as well dropping off the manipulative activities between the middlemen. It provides a very suitable and reliable medium between the producer and the subsequent consumer with reasonable and less risk involved. That is the entire essence of the union.
