The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, converged on the Ibom International Airport to receive the state Chairman of the Party, Obong Paul Ekpo, who was at Abuja to witness the Supreme Court judgement which validated Senator Ahmed Markarafi as leader of the party.
Addressing the mamoth crowd, Obong Ekpo described the judgement as victory for democracy, saying that the apex court has upheld decisions of the party convention where Senator Ahmed Markarafi emerged as the National Caretaker Chairman of the party.
He said the verdict has put an end to the legal tussle that threatened the unity of the party, and applauded the leadership and members of the party in the state for standing firm during the trying period.
Obong Paul Ekpo thanked the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, members of the National and State Assemblies and other stakeholders for their doggedness and support which has made the party a religion in the state, noting that PDP has come back with renewed vigor stronger and more united.
He therefore used the occasion to urge party faithful to demonstrate the victory in the forthcoming local government elections, and advised defectors to have a rethink and come back to the rebranded party which has been repositioned to change things in the country for a democratic governance.
The Supreme Court had on Wednesday, dismissed the appeal of Senator Ali Sheriff and declared Senator Ahmed Makarfi as the National Chairman of PDP, ending an 18-month leadership tussle in the party.
