How Nsima Ekere ‘Killed’ 6 In Ikot Abasi, Relocate Scene To Calabar-Itu Road
By Kingsley Umoh-Obong
Facts have emerged concerning a ghastly motor accident involving the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) MD, Obong Nsima Ekere’s convoy and a trailer, killing several people on Thursday last week, when he was said to have been rushing to receive the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who visited Calabar, the Cross River State capital.
Mr Nsima had informed Nigerians that the tragic incident took place along Calabar – Itu Expressway, but investigations revealed that the incident occurred in Ikot Akpa Enin in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
Eyewitnesses’ accounts have it that “Nsima Ekere and his convoy were coming from Port Harcourt. On getting to the junction, his police escort tried to clear the road by stationing the Hilux at the middle of the junction, but it was quite too close for an oncoming trailer as it collided with the Hilux which somersaulted severally, leaving all its occupants unconscious,” Udeme Francis narrated.
Contrary to claims by the NDDC’s MD that only two policemen died, it was also revealed that over six lives were lost in the tragic incident.
“It was God that saved us that day. If not that it was a market day and we went to the market, all of us would have been dead by now. A passenger, an indigene of the area called Sunny, who arrived home on a commercial motorcycle, died on the spot while the rider suffered broken hand and leg,” Mr Silvanus, a commercial motorcyclist disclosed.
Speaking further, Silvanus said “We assisted in evacuating some of the victims including six of his (Nsima Ekere’s) police escorts who were unconscious. The dead were taken to the mortuary while others were taken to the hospital, as Nsima Ekere remained inside his vehicle and refused to come out.”
At the scene of the incident, kola tree was seen uprooted and a tent destroyed due to the force of the auto crash. Vehicle parts belonging to the trailer and one leg of a pair of shoes belonging to the deceased (Sunny) were seen.
It is still sketchy, and Akwa Ibomites, Nigerians and the whole world are waiting to know why Obong Nsima Ekere had to lie, relocate the scene of the ghastly accident which took place in Ikot Abasi to Calabar – Itu Expressway, and the actual number of casualty recorded during the unfortunate incident.
Meanwhile, both the Hilux and the trailer are currently being detained at the police station in the Ikot Abasi for further investigation.
