Unity: A Significant Tool In Building A Nation
By Umoh-Obong Kingsley
“The point in history at which we stand is full of promise and danger. The world will either move forward toward unity and widely shared prosperity – or it will move apart” –Franklin D. Roosevelt
“Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved” –Mattie Stepanek.
Unity is a state of being one; oneness. It is a whole or totality as combining all its parts into one. It can also be seen as the state or fact of being united or combined into one, as of the parts of a whole; unification. The absence of diversity; unvaried or uniform character brings about unity. Oneness of mind, feeling, etc, as among a number of persons; concord, harmony, or agreement, gives birth to unity.
Akwa Ibom State, before now, had lacked unity and a lot of indigenes of the state do have the problem of uniting with each other even when they move to a higher position, resulting to one always wanting the fall of the other.
In the time past, we hardly had governors coming together; we hardly had predecessors and successors having a robust relationship; but the positive drive of Governor Udom Emmanuel to unite the state and to make the vision beneficial to Akwa Ibomites has seen all the public servants of the state coming back together to see how they can move the state forward which has to do with the Akwa Ibom project.
There have been tremendous improvements in the Akwa Ibom project; there is commitment, even at the funeral of the late Onna monarch, former governors and deputy governors came together, spoke with one voice. It transcended to Ibeno where Governor Emmanuel registered commitment to the upliftment of the traditional institution in order to give them the sense of belonging, thereby asking them to contribute to the growth of Akwa Ibom State.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Political and Legislative Affairs and Water Resources, Rt. Hon. (Barr) Ekong Sampson, in a recent interaction, noted that “There is time for everything. Akwa Ibom State today is a testimony. It shows that Governor Udom Emmanuel is working and wants to embrace the various strands that make up Akwa Ibom State so that at the end of the day, we have a new Akwa Ibom where people can sit together and discuss, chart the way forward. That is how it should be.”
This unity came to reality at the funeral of late Akwa Edidem Akpabio Udo Ukpa, where the Akwa Ibom stood still and excellence was exalted. Our stakeholders came together to illustrate the spirit – the pan Akwa Ibom outlook, great sight, excellence spectacle and great promise.
A lot of people say the Governor is now paying so much concern in the traditional institution as he did not send anyone to represent him but went there by himself and spent time to see to it that the coronation of the Ibeno Traditional Ruler, Owong Achanga, was successful. To him, the coronation was a testament of good concern of his love for traditional institution.
Barr Ekong emphatically stated that Governor Emmanuel has a lot of respect for our traditional institution and elders as he clearly stated during his electioneering campaign.
“It shows that Governor is fully committed to bringing Akwa Ibom into one family to work as a team and as a great people, and the only way to achieving that is by showing respect to our royal fathers, elders, youths and the various strands that make up the state. Truly, Akwa Ibom State is working because you need unity to drive a state.
“What Governor Emmanuel is illustrating is that unity is critical. You drive unity by bringing the people together, you show respect for various elements and collapse the state into one strong fabric.”
The unity and vision of Governor Udom Emmanuel is beyond politics unlike others who politicise a lot of issues. Anyone who is privileged to work with Governor Emmanuel will see in him a leader committed to investing in the future. A leader who believes that we have to look beyond one parameter that we have to invest in the future.
