NLC Chairman Uses Sacked Akwapoly Labour Leader For Thuggery
Investigation has revealed that the Chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Etim Ukpong, has been using one Comrade Iboro Ibara who parades himself as the Vice Chairman and Acting Secretary of the NLC in the state to instigate crises in the labour structures of the state.
An exclusive document obtained by Global Pilot revealed that the said Iboro Ibara’s activities as a labour leader were illegal since his employers and his co-workers at the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua had since disowned him and proscribed his Academics Staff Union of Polytechnics,ASUP, Ikot Osurua Chapter.
It was also discovered that Comrade Ibara had already served out his tenure as ASUP Chairman about 2years ago.
A letter issued by the Polytechnic’s management and signed by the Deputy Registrar(Academic), Dr. Mrs. M. S. Ndah, dated 24 November, 2015, titled: “Withdrawal of Recognition of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) Ikot Osurua Chapter, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene, reads; “The attention of management has been drawn to a rift within the Academic Staff Union of this institution which has resulted in two factions of same. To further exacerbate the intractable rift, management has been served with a summons in suit No. NIC/UY/13/2105 now pending before Uyo Division of the National Industrial Court, to which this institution has been joined as a co-defendant”.
Continuing, the statement added “Management is very uncomfortable with series of disturbing correspondence wit h each faction laying claim to legitimacy. It is to be observed that the rift in the union poses serious threat to peace and order in the institution”.
“In view of the above, management, after due consultations, has decided as follows 1. Withdraw recognition of either faction of ASUP, 2. Stop further the release of check-off dues to ASUP until the matter before the court is adjudicated. Same will be deposited in an escroll account until the court decides. 3. Advise both factions to sheath their swords, mind their utterances and releases and avoid taking laws into their hands and respectfully await the decision of the court”.
Accordingly, both factions are hereby cautioned” .
Also disowning Ibara are members of ASUP in the Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic. The Lecturers in a protest letter obtained by this newspaper, warned the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Etim Ukpong not to have any dealing with the sacked Akwa Poly ASUP Chairman.
In their letter titled “Illegal Parading by Comrade Iboro Ibara as Vice Chairman/Acting Secretary of NLC Akwa Ibom State Council”, the lecturers said “In view of the continuous illegal parading by Comrade Iboro Ibara as the Vice Chairman/Acting Secretary of NLC, Akwa Ibom State Council, we wish to state categorically that: 1. Article 20 of the constitution of NLC states thet “ Any elected officer of the congress who is dismissed or who resigns his/her membership of the affiliated union under whose platform he /she was elected automatically forfeits his or her office in the congress”.
“In line with the above, Comrade Iboror Ibara seizes to function as an Executive member of the congress following the withdrawal/disbandment of his union by the school management and resolution by his members.(see attached)”.
2. Whereas Article 13.04 of ASUP states tenure of officers as follows: “all officers shall be elected for a term of 2 years after which they can seek for a second and final of 2 years on the same position”. It could be noted that, the said Comrade Iboro Ibara had completed four years of 2 conscutive terms as ASUP Chairman Akwapoly with additional one year having been elected since 2009 before the withdrawal of recognition/disbandment of ASUP by the school management and resolution by members of ASUP Akwapoly debunking his purported Chairmanship(see attached)”.
The lecturers asked Comrade Ibara to stop parading himself as Vice Chairman/Acting Secretary of NLC in the state. They described the continuous stay of Ibara as a member of the state exco of NLC as illegal, and alerted the state government, State NLC, and law enforcement agencies against having any dealings with the embattled Ibara to avoid industrial disharmony in the state.
The alleged refusal by the state NLC boss, Comrade Etim Ukpong to honour the position of the polytechnic management and members of ASUP of the polytechnic after they had disowned Ibara, according to investigation is capable of causing industrial disharmony between the polytechnic and the state government.
Attempts by this newspaper to reach out to Comrade Ibara to get his own reaction on the matter, proved abortive as his lines were not connecting as at press time.
