Knocks On Prof. Etok Ekanem Over Utterances On Sen. Akpabio
A former national lawmaker, Professor Ini Udoka and other eminent Akwa Ibom people have advised an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain and aide to the NDDC Managing Director, Prof Etok Ekanem, to avoid making nonsense of himself through careless utterances in the name of politics.
Prof Ekanem, a former Commissioner for Agriculture, had gone to the social media to lampoon Senator Godswill Akpabio, his former boss, like an undemocratic politician that has lost his position as the Senate Minority Leader.
However, a professor of History and former member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Ini Udoka, and other informed commentators have expressed dismay at the level of bitterness and ignorance exhibited by the APC chieftain, saying it was unwarranted and shameful.
Prof Udoka explained to Prof Ekanem that, “Sen. Akpabio is still the Senate Minority Leader. The Labour Party Senator was only filling the void for the day of the walkout by PDP Senators. Walkout is also an acceptable parliamentary practice worldwide used in expressing discontent by mostly minority parties in parliament.”
The Transition Chairman of Abak Local government, Barr Emmanuel Udosen, said: “It beats my imagination why an academic Professor of note could come online to display such crass ignorance because of his rabid hatred for Godswill Akpabio!”
Another commentator, Ubong Akpabio, could not hide his emotions by saying, “It’s quite unfortunate that a man who used to command influence and respect is now dancing naked in the village market to the chagrin of bystanders. It’s my humble opinion that you rest and possibly treat yourself of political fatigue whose symptoms we just observed.”
For Imo Usoro, “Prof, I think is high time you left the sycophancy style of politics because it kills easily. You were a commissioner under our dear Senator, the then governor and you enriched yourself without extending the riches to your immediate family let alone others. I’m sorry to brand you a GREEDY MAN.”
In Kokoette Udom’s words, “In 2011, if the Undemocratic Senator Akpabio and PDP had given you the ticket you so much wanted, today Senator Akpabio will still be your mentor and a role model and PDP the best party. Oh woe to thee, adulterous fellow!
“I am young in years and you are old; therefore, I was shy and afraid to tell you what I think; for I thought age should speak, and increased years should teach wisdom. With your years of scholastic training, age likewise, I would have expected more wisdom, but am greatly perturb that yours lack wisdom. And truly years don’t make a man wise neither does age make understanding.
“You served under Senator Godswill Akpabio as commissioner for three good years and resigned voluntarily to pursue your failed ambition to the green chamber which later turned you into a sadist and made your years of learning a total waste.
“Senator Akpabio became undemocratic since you could not lobby your way back into the state exco after his re-election in 2011 and your failed ambition.
“Senator Akpabio is now undemocratic in his dealing after picking you as a commissioner for three years, (where you were hitherto unknown), gave you a political career which is dead already.
“Prof, In 2014 in case you have forgotten with your now short memory, APC senators, ably led by Senator Oluremi Tinubu, staged a walk out during a ministerial screening. This was democratic because it was the party your new adulterous lifestyle has taken you to, but when the PDP senators acted that same way, demanding the law to take its place, it became undemocratic.
“Let me speak that I may get relief. Let me now be partial to no one nor flatter any man. Prof Etok Ekanem, I put it to you that you have spoken without wisdom.
“You are guilty of biting the hand that gave you the diminishing popularity you still ride on. As the bible posits, “WOE TO ANY MAN WHO REWARD EVIL FOR GOOD.” You need no soothsayer to tell you that curse is currently on you and your band of ingrate who benefited greatly from Senator Akpabio in his time as Governor but turn to throw dirt on him when the privilege was withdrawn.
“Let me end by telling you that you are not right in this, for Greater is Senator Akpabio than you and your likes.”
A media professional, Anietie Ekong, sounded a note of warning thus, “this is very embarrassing for a Professor to display this kind of ignorance about the workings of a democracy. You may have an ax to grind with Senator Akpabio, your Oga and mentor, according to you, but you should not display this level of ignorance in a public sphere being a teacher.”
To Akan Offiong, “I sincerely believe that the one person that seriously needs purging is Prof Etok Ekanem. How does a Senator that is constitutionally exercising his fundamental rights in accordance with the Senate Rules, be anti-democratic? Even more astonishing is the realization that the writer served the state under Akpabio as a Commissioner. I make bold to say that any Akwa Ibomite accusing Akpabio of being anti-democratic needs a mental evaluation.”
Solomon Nse: Prof. I can vividly remember you were Dean Student Affairs University of Uyo. During your reign, you were widely accused of influencing and manipulating SUG elections in favour of management candidates as against the students’ wishes. Before you were appointed Commissioner of Agric and National Resources, you lived in the University quarters at the back of Ultrafit, suddenly within your three year as Commissioner, you built over N300 million worth edifice at B-Line, Ewet Housing Estate; you bought properties everywhere in this town of which I do not want to mention locations here. Sir, if you could steal or embezzle all these in just three years as a commissioner, then Godswill Akpabio should be canonized.
Israel Umoh: Is the Professor celebrating the supposed exit of Senator Godswill Akpabio as Senate Minority Leader? Then it is unfortunate for him? Our Akwa Ibom people have a proverb which says that “the tragedy of a kinsman should not delight his fellow brother.” Professor, if this is true and if you are a patriotic Akwa Ibom person, you should be crying not otherwise not even castigating the man for his undemocratic tendencies (according to you as his one-time Commissioner).
Ubong Creativity David: Prof, I don’t insult elderly people and do not intend to do so. The university as we used to know then was called “Ufok Nwed Nta Ifiok” not to talk of a Professor. Even former Presidential Adviser, Barr Ahmed Gulak, despite supporting Ali Sheriff, admitted that the Constitution made it very clear on the issue of defection and must be followed accordingly. The issue you raised is clearly a constitutional issue and shouldn’t be handled with emotion.
