AKSG To Relocate Uyo Federal Prison
The Uyo Federal Prisons sited at the entrance of Akwa Ibom State Government House, Wellington Bassey Way- Uyo, would soon be relocated to a more befitting site.
Governor Udom Emmanuel announced this when the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Prisons Service Mr Ahmed Ja’afaru, who is in the state on a – three day working visit, called on him at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Uyo.
He said: “The present location of the Uyo Federal Prisons is no longer suitable considering the high traffic of persons for various activities within the vicinity, massive transformation that has envelop the area and it proximity to the Seat of Government. We are constructing a befitting structure to relocate the Prison to the new complex”
He added “despite the paucity of funds and non-reimbursement of funds expended on Federal Assets by the Federal Government, the state will strive within the limit of it resources to meet it obligations.”
Governor Emmanuel stated that his administration is undertaking a rehabilitation of Ikot Abasi Prisons and that the Uyo Prison will be expanded to accommodate inmates in Abak Local Government Area Prison pending the construction of a befitting structure in the area.
He explained that the move would enable the Prison realise it purpose as a corrective and rehabilitation centre as inmates would be trained in specialised skills and re-integrated into the society.
Governor Emmanuel particularly congratulated Mr Ahmed Ja’afaru on his elevation to the position of Comptroller General and assured him of his administration’s readiness to work so as to enable him succeed in his new office.
Earlier in his speech, Mr Ja’afaru Ahmed said his visit followed the request by Akwa Ibom State Government to relocate the Uyo Federal Prisons and announced that approval has been granted by the Honourable Minister of Interior Abdulrahman Dambazau, to effect the demolition and relocation.
He said his three – day working visit to the state would enable him asses the establishment and used the occasion to appreciate the Governor for his well thought decision which he said has translated to his rehabilitation of the Federal infrastructure in the state.
Mr Ahmed who noted that Akwa Ibom State has reduced the number of Prisons in the state from five to four with the demolition of the Abak Prison, passionately request for it replacement.
The Prisons Comptroller General expressed appreciation to the state government and the people of the state for their contributions to the welfare of inmates as well as the rehabilitation of the Prison facility.
