Man, 42, In Police Net For Defining 8-Year Old Girl
A forty-two years old man is currently cooling his heels in the custody of the Nigerian Police, Eket Division for allegedly raping an 8+year old girl in his care.
The suspect, simple identified as Isangadighe Tam, allegedly had carnal knowledge of the minor (names withheld), thrice in January this year. This is in addition to branding the victim, a primary three pupil of a nursery school in Eket and her younger sister as witches.
The suspect often maltreats and starve them, accusing them of taking his properties to the witchcraft world and attributed the hard luck that has befallen him, (Isangadighe) to them and often used cane and belt to flog them.
Later when her father returned from work, she reported the incident to him who rebuked her to keep shut.
The victim, while narrating the unfortunate incident that occurred thrice in January this year, recalled her father, a security personnel, who usually leave home early in the morning for duty.
The suspect would take undue advantage of the situation, and on that fateful day, ordered her younger sister not to come out of the parlour while he took her to another room, tied her hands together, laid her on the floor and raped her.
“I usually shout and cry for help but to no avail”, she lamented.
She further explained, now that her father had travelled to Lagos, she ran with her younger sister to her grandmother to avoid a reoccurrence and to escape from the man’s inhuman treatment. She insisted not to return to their father’s house.
It was gathered from the said grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Odungide, that the girls are with her even as she has reported the incident to the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare at Uyo for help.
She alleged in her letter that the father of these children had accused them of witchcrafts and often use baton and belt on them, Inflicting serious bodily injuries on them.
Mrs Odungide appealed to the State Government through her several agencies, non-governmental organizations, civil society groups to come to the aid of these children and help enforce the provisions of the child right law operational in the state on the culprit.
