AKSG Flags Off ICT Training For Youths
The Akwa Ibom State Government has commenced youth training programme aimed at exposing them to acquire skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as part of its empowerment programme.
The programme which is on micro-work training is being conducted in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Communication Technology and supported by the Rockefeller Foundation.
The Hon. Commissioner, Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr. (Mrs) Elizabeth Obot while flagging off the training programme for 1000 unemployed youths of the state in Uyo disclosed that the first set of youth trained in oracle programme in August this year will be certified and sponsored for further International exams by the State Government.
Dr. Obot maintained that the Ministry was focused on realizing the vision of the Governor to make Akwa Ibom Youth become key players in the globalized economy through the development of ICT skills.
She explained that the Government is investing in youths training to ensure that they become competent to occupy certain offices, apply for any job available anywhere in the world and have the capacity to run the industries to be built in the state, adding that a center will soon be approved in Akwa Ibom for all international professional online examinations.
The international exams she said included Microsoft Office Specialist, Microsoft Certified System Expert, CISCO, Oracle Certified Programme, COMPTIA A+, COMPTIA NETWORK A+, Project+ among others.
The Hon. Commissioner also announced the establishment of Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) which is the first of its kind in the South-south Region, stating that (DBI) is a training institute that is open to the public for ICT training and managed by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). She added that its establishment in the state will boost high capacity development in the area of ICT.
According to her, such centers only existed in Enugu, Abuja, Kano and Lagos before the proposed center in Akwa Ibom.
Appreciating Akwa Ibom State Government for investing heavily on training youths in ICT, Dr. Obot revealed that the training of the 1000 youths in Micro-work is to adequately prepare youths of the state to access online – digital jobs maintaining that already, the training has taken place in 19 states of the federation with the estimation that more than 1000 jobs are available online daily on various platforms with an average income of between $1,000 and $4,000 monthly according to industry sources.
The Commissioner advised the beneficiaries of the Micro-work programme to reciprocate government’s benevolence by being of good behavior during the training urging them to be good ambassadors in the quest of government to improve the lot of youths and society in general.
The representative of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs Mfon Otuekong Ukut, restated that the training was government’s move to empower youths to be self-reliant assuring that the training will be beneficial in job creation and urged beneficiaries to take it seriously in order to tap the full benefits.
The programme Engineer, Federal Ministry of Communication Technology, Mr. Dauda Sampson explained that the training started in March 2013 and is focused on helping youths find jobs online and reduce poverty.
Mr. Sampson said his Ministry intends to train 30,000 unemployed youths across the federation and out of which 17,000 have so far been trained in 18 states, Akwa Ibom being 19th in the series of training.
The Special Assistant to the Governor on Political Matters, Comrade Ini Ememobong explained further that Micro-work specifically describes breakdown of large block of job or work into smaller chunks and distributed across the internet for job seekers all over the world.
Mr. Ememobong said the training will offer Akwa Ibom Youths the opportunity to use their time in making money online instead of peddling rumors online and insulting elders.
