Nigerians Disagree Over Suspension Of Kumuyi’s Son
Nigerians are divided over the suspension of John and Love Kumuyi from taking part in any church activity following their controversial wedding in Jamaica last month.
The leadership of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry had placed the couple on indefinite suspension for bringing the church into disrepute and breaching its standards regarding marriage and godly adornment.
Reactions have continued to pour in after the suspension was published.
Many people took sides with the leadership of the church over the suspension, while others criticised its action after the couple had apologised.
“What’s wrong with the clothes the lady is wearing? This do-as-I-say attitude is killing this country of ours. If they suspend them from Deeper Life there’s always Redeemed or Christ Embassy,” a reader, who simply identified himself as Naubiko said.
Another reader, Blessing Nice countered Naubiko’s comment, saying that “hope you’re a Christian? If you attend one of those churches you just mentioned good for you. You don’t have the right to say that; every word you use will be used against you when the time comes.
“Those churches have nothing in common with the Deeper Christian Life Ministry. It’s a church so different, be careful or you attract the wrath of God. Thank you, run your own race if you’re on track.”
A reader, Mykel said it was good that the couple apologised, but noted that they should have known better the dressing standard laid down for the church members with no exception.
According to Autina Hart, God is interested in a man’s heart, saying that “I have one here in my office that wears skirt all the time but her heart and act is as bitter as ‘yoyo’ bitters. She lies a lot and very cunning and has never won a soul.”
Aikay, a reader from Canada could not see what was wrong with the wedding gown the bride wore, saying, “tell me, what is wrong with this woman’s wedding gown? In fact, it is one of the most conservative piece of wedding gowns I have seen in a long time; even more so conservative than the one my mother wedded with in 1974.
“I don’t know why this people are troubling this young couple. If the women who attend this church in Nigeria are brain-washed to wear garbage bags or bed sheets as their wedding gowns, that their cup of tea. Deeper Life is not the only church they can attend. Here in Canada, people wear wedding gowns that shows half of their breasts, with hair extensions that are longer.” Another reader, Olu, said “I love Baba Kumuyi for not sparing his son after going against the church’s standard. I love John too for realizing his mistakes and asking for forgiveness. The church is marching on and the gate of hell will not prevail. We should be heaven conscious every minute.”
A reader, simply called Sureworld said Deeper Life displayed good example of how a church or nation should live, while Anon has a different view, saying that the couple only apoligised to man for going against its tradition and not God.”
According to Remy, the action taken showed that the church would not spare anyone compromising its standard, even if they are the sons of the General Overseer, saying this is what is required for a nation to advance, and that more importantly, the couple realised their error and tried to make amends even openly.
Ubong Effiok insisted that there was nothing wrong wearing the gown, but noted that since it is against the doctrine of the church, “and more so John, being the son of Kumuyi, he should have taken precaution, knowing what the church and his father stand for, to avoid the embarrassment brought to the church and his parents. Kudos to Kumuyi for taking a bold step to discipline his own son and for his exemplary leadership.”
Another reader simply said: “Kumuyi was at the wedding and did not storm off in protest. He took pictures with the couple and was seen smiling gleefully. The current action of the church is just a reaction to the storm generated in the social media .How come no one is complaining about the touché suit worn by the groom. The Lady is modestly dressed and the couple should spend their honeymoon in joy not in controversy.”
Bege Nuhu congratulated John and Love for realizing what they had done and asked for forgiveness, saying the devil would always be put to shame, adding that the Church of Christ would always march on and the gates of hell shall not prevail, saying that “I respect Deeper Life Ministry. Keep it up.”
A Ghanaian, Kofi said the action taken is a good example from a good leader living by example, saying whether the dressing was good or bad was not his concern, but that a laid down principle of an organisation should be respected by all and sundry.
According to him, every organization has acceptable standards that all members must abide by, stressing that “on this issue, the church standard was compromised, leaders disciplined them and on their own part they apologised knowing and accepting that they were wrong. Both parties are on the same page; therefore it’s nobody’s business to condemn either the couple or the church anymore.”
Shandy says: “This is hypocrisy at the highest order! The standard Deeper Life Bible Church set is not in the Bible. They set a standard that they follow dogmatically without questioning, because they don’t even read the Bible in the first place. They only read it in the church, so anybody can easily tell them anything.
“The Bible says, without holiness, no man shall see God. ‘Holiness’ in other words, is not about dressing or what you wear or what you don’t wear! It’s about your absolute trust and faith in God. But what are we seeing in Deeper Life? The other way round!”
Isaac said there are laid down rules binding marriage in Deeper Life ministry and that if the General Superintendent’s son could violate such rules, it was an indication that he is not born again, and that he is not in agreement with what his father is teaching and preaching.
“There is the tendency that the boy/ young man just fell in love but cannot control the wife. However, Christianity in Nigeria is quite different from what is obtainable in Jamaica, US, Canada, etc. Even in RCCG, CAC, here in the United States, the choristers wear their trousers, painted their faces and lips while ministering on the altar.
“It’s in the States you see women dancing on the altar with horse tail. So, the young man need not to allow his so-called wife to cause him to rebel against the doctrine of his father’s ministry. Daddy Kumuyi stands out and upright among all the men of God in Nigeria. They do it well, but he does it better and than them all. The young man, especially the wife, need spiritual re-orientation,” he said.
Ige Oluwaseye said there is nothing wrong in the suspension as every church has her own doctrine, standard, laid down rules and regulations, saying that no matter whom the person involved may be, the person needed to be sanctioned.
“Sometimes Nigerians are very hypocritical. I love Deeper Life for this sanction. They should not derail and allow any other churches or members to derail them. People are very difficult to manage and satisfy. Sanction them and whoever violates the rules and regulations of your congregation.”
