3 Varsity Students Shot Dead
Three students of the University of Uyo, Uniuyo, have been reportedly shot dead in a peaceful riot which later turned violent at the school main campus, Wednesday afternoon.
The Engineering students of Uniuyo were said to have embarked on a peaceful protest to the school’s Vice Chancellor’s office in order to address issues about the sudden changes made by the VC concerning their transportation from the school’s Main Campus to Uniuyo Permanent Site.
The Vice Chancellor was said to have ordered that students who want to board the school bus from Main camp to the permanent site for lectures had to pay N200 daily.
As a result, the Engineering students of the university staged a peaceful protest to the VC’s office to lay their complaints about the sudden changes.
On arrival, the security officials at the VC’s office denied them access to the Vice Chancellor. The students therefore retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials. The security officials had no option but to call for a back-up team of policemen, which resulted to the riot.
The police, who were supposed to calm the situation, allegedly tear-gassed and opened fire at the students, leaving three of the students dead.
One of the students alleged short by the police was simply identified as Kessy.
The students, on the other hand, set the office of the VC ablaze and also destroyed other school properties.
The University of Uyo has been temporarily shutdown till further notice.
Meanwhile, the female students occupying the hostels have all been asked to vacate the hostel immediately for security reasons.
