Fun Seekers, Traders Lament Closure Of Bar Beach

Fun seekers who trooped to the Lagos Bar Beach for the Democracy Day celebration on Wednesday, condemned its closure due to the ongoing reclamation project by the Lagos State Government.

Some of the picnickers expressed their disgust at the closure.

Mr. Ola Sunkanmi, a beach operator, said that fun was at its lowest ebb as a result of the sand filling, as there was nowhere for the picnickers to settle down.

“People, including picnickers and traders, are restricted from the beach. They could not have access to the water.

“This has made many of our customers to move down to Elegushi, Alpha and Lekki Beaches, to enjoy the Democracy Day public holiday,” he said.

Lola Oba, an unemployed university graduate, said that she regretted coming to the beach, as people were not allowed access to the arena.

“The Bar Beach is so dry; no movement to the sea, nowhere to sit and the weather has been too hot.

“It is only the horses that are available to the picnickers to ride on along the coastline far from the beach,” she said.

A cleric, Alhaji Abdul Rasheed Adebayo, said that he was also prevented from going near the beach to meditate.

The soft drinks and ice cream hawkers who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria on condition of anonymity also described business as ‘very dull’ because of the poor turnout of people.
